Serendipity Allium

Serendipity Allium features compact, prolific clusters of rosy-purple, pouf-shaped flowers. Drought tolerant, it is pollinator friendly and nuisance resistant. Bees and butterflies love it – deer and rabbits not-so-much. This allium works hard as a border plant and delivers eye-candy color when planted en masse. Also add it to containers and cut flower gardens. Echinacea, phlox, yarrow and salvia make good companion plants.

Serendipity Allium is easy to grow and tolerates average, fertile and poor soils. It blooms in summer. The foliage is upright in a pretty shade of blue green. It reaches almost 2 feet tall at maturity and has a spread of 1¼ feet. This allium requires virtually no maintenance. Plant it in part- to full-sun, in USDA Hardiness Zones 4 to 8. Sold in 1 gallon containers.

‘Cat’s Meow’ Catmint (Nepeta faassenii)

Cat’s Meow & Cat’s Pajamas Catmint

Besides being just plain fun to say, Cat’s Meow and Cat’s Pajamas are catmints with attitudes. Cat’s Meow is a uniform grower with dense, colorful flowers and a refined habit. Perfect for tucking into small spaces, Cat’s Pajamas has indigo-blue flowers that begin at the soil and swish all the way to the tip.

Both are fragrant, continuous rebloomers that are heat and drought tolerant. Perfect in the pollinator garden, these Nepetas attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds and are deer and rabbit resistant. Cat’s Meow grows to about 2 feet tall at maturity and has a 3-foot spread. Cat’s Pajamas is a shorter, more compact plant, at 1 foot tall and wide at maturity. It starts its bloom first in late spring and continues through late summer. Cat’s Meow blooms from early summer through early fall. Sheer Nepeta back to encourage rebloom. Plant in sun, in USDA Hardiness Zones 3 to 8. Sold in 1 gallon containers.

Dianthus Mountain Frost™ Pink PomPom (Dianthus hybrida)

Dianthus Pink PomPom

This is a Dianthus worth cheering about! Lovely fragrant, bright-pink blossoms go on and on from late spring to early fall. Dark-hued foliage is evergreen in fall and winter. A perfect perennial for the cutting garden, it is also ideal in a full-sun border or rock garden. Dianthus Pink PomPom has a neat and tidy habit and is virtually maintenance free. It requires water only as needed in drought conditions and fertilizer once a month. Sheer back old flowering stems to encourage rebloom.

Dianthus Pink PomPom prefers loose and sandy alkaline soils and works well in containers. It attracts butterflies, is drought resistant and tolerates rainy, wet conditions. It has a short height and width of 6 to 8 inches. Plant in full sun, in late spring to early fall. Sold in 1 gallon containers.

Salvia nemorosa ‘Blue by You’ (Salvia hybrida)

Blue by You Salvia

It is easy to see why Salvia nemorosa ‘Blue by You’ is a 2023 All-America Selection. This garden workhorse brings a lot to the landscape while keeping its cool beauty from early spring through fall. Rich, purple-blue hues bring Zen to perennial borders, cutting gardens and pollinator beds. Plant en masse for a calming display. Taller white flowers such as yarrow and coneflower play great supporting roles as companion plants.

Salvia attracts honey and native bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. It is deer resistant and heat and frost tolerant. Enjoy repeat blooms throughout the growing season, especially when spent blooms are removed. Give Blue by You plenty of space to stretch. This upright, mounded perennial grows to about 2 feet tall and has a similar spread. Plant in full sun and fertilize monthly. Does best in USDA Hardiness Zones 4 to 9. Sold in 1 gallon containers.

Fragrant ‘Denim ‘n Lace’ Russian Sage is perfect for Midwest gardens, especially those in hot, dry areas.  Lacey, purple-blue flowers are held on sturdy stems in an upright habit. This hardy perennial tolerates a variety of soils and has multiple uses in the landscape, as well as in dried and cut flower arrangements. Hummingbirds love it. Deer do not. ‘Denim ‘n Lace’ Russian Sage has a mature height of about 3 feet. Width at maturity is also about 3 feet. Plant in sun, in USDA Hardiness Zones 4 to 9. Sold in 1 gallon containers.
