Planting Cloud Dancer

A season of quiet reflection arrives with the introduction of Cloud Dancer, the 2026 Pantone Color of the Year. This “billowy white imbued with serenity” provides gardeners and plant industry professionals with a reliable foundation to brighten landscapes and provide an exciting backdrop for pastel- and neutral-toned companion plants. The following selections represent relevant varieties we’re growing at Loma Vista Nursery.

Lyrical™ White Salvia – Salvia nemorosa

Lyrical™ White Salvia

Lyrical™ White Salvia is a garden staple. Robust spikes of pure white flowers contrast with its dark green foliage. Appropriate for USDA Hardiness Zones 4 to 9, this perennial has a compact, mounded habit that reaches 12 inches high and wide. It is a sun-loving workhorse that handles the heat of a Midwestern summer with ease, while attracting a steady stream of pollinators. After the first flush of spring blooms, a quick shear encourages a second wave of white to carry the Cloud Dancer aesthetic into late summer.

This salvia is valued for its deer and rabbit resistance, making it a reliable choice for landscapes where grazing is a concern. Sturdy stems prevent flopping, ensuring the plant’s white spikes remain upright and visible. For striking contrast, pair with silvery blue Russian sage. Lyrical™ White Salvia thrives in well-drained soil and provides a crisp, clean texture that bridges the gap between low-growing groundcovers and taller shrubs.

Illuminati® Tower Mockorange (Philadelphus coronarius) Proven Winners Photo

Illuminati® Tower Mockorange

Illuminati® Tower Mockorange has an upright, narrow habit with stacked, deep-green leaves that resemble a four-sided tower. Foliage provides a dense, neutral backdrop for the rest of the growing season, as intoxicating white flowers blanket the shrub. Height at maturity is about 6 feet; width is 4 feet. Ideal in USDA Hardiness Zones 4 to 8, plant this mockorange in partial to full sun.

Talk about plants with benefits! Illuminati® Tower Mockorange creates a sensory experience that visual beauty alone cannot achieve. To maximize its impact, designers should locate it near entryways or outdoor living spaces where the scent can be appreciated. This is a tough shrub that adapts well to various soil types, including heavy clay. It functions well as a seasonal screen or as a companion to early-blooming lilacs and viburnums.

Chardonnay Pearls® (Deutzia gracilis)

Chardonnay Pearls® Deutzia

Chardonnay Pearls® Deutzia offers a bright, architectural element to the landscape with its lime-yellow foliage and pearl-like white buds. This compact shrub grows 2 to 3 feet tall and wide, making it an ideal choice for mass plantings or low hedges in USDA Hardiness Zones 5 to 8. White flowers open in late spring, creating a luminous effect against bright foliage. As the season progresses, leaves turn consistent green before transitioning to subtle burgundy in fall.

This deutzia is a versatile choice for gardens where space is limited. It is low maintenance. Prune only a little to maintain its rounded shape. Although it can tolerate light afternoon shade, plant Chardonnay Pearls® Deutzia where it can get at least six hours of sun. This will help ensure vibrant foliage color. Plant with dark-leaved heuchera or blue-toned hostas to emphasize the shrub’s chartreuse and Cloud Dancer-white highlights.

White Chiffon® Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus)

White Chiffon® Rose of Sharon

With large, anemone-like blooms, White Chiffon® Rose of Sharon is a perfect choice for the evening garden. Crisp-white flowers lend a sense of refreshing coolness. Their showy, fluffy ruffle centers seem to shimmer under night lighting. This hibiscus typically matures at 8 to 12 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide. It maintains a tidy, upright habit that performs well in narrow spaces and as a flowering screen. It is a heat-tolerant powerhouse that begins its show as other spring-blooming shrubs start to fade. Plant in USDA Hardiness Zones 5 to 9.

White Chiffon® Rose of Sharon is a sterile variety, meaning it will not produce seedlings. Its late-season blooming period makes it a critical food source for hummingbirds and butterflies during the hottest months of the year. This hibiscus prefers full sun and well-drained soil but is drought-tolerant once established. Create a monochromatic garden of peace and reflection by planting it with white-variegated dogwoods or with silver-foliage perennials.

White Pillar® Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus)

White Pillar® Rose of Sharon

White Pillar® Rose of Sharon offers a distinctively narrow form that is perfect for contemporary landscape designs that call for vertical accents. This cultivar grows 10 to 15 feet tall but stays only 4 to 5 feet wide. It maintains its columnar shape without the need for extensive pruning or shearing. Pure white semi-double blooms cover this hibiscus from summer through fall.  Dark green foliage creates a high-contrast backdrop for the bright white flowers, which stay open even in lower light conditions. Plant in USDA Hardiness Zones 5 to 9.

Use groupings of this plant to create living privacy walls in tight spaces between buildings or along property lines. Consider adding vertical height to the landscape by planting it in the ground or in large containers to flank a doorway. White Pillar® Rose of Sharon performs best in full sun and is highly resistant to common pests and diseases. Consider pairing it with low-growing, spreading evergreens or a carpet of violet-purple groundcovers.

Incrediball Storm Proof™ Smooth Hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens) – Proven Winners Photo

Incrediball Storm Proof™ Smooth Hydrangea

Seeking the massive, billowy white blooms that define the Cloud Dancer aesthetic? Incrediball Storm Proof™ Smooth Hydrangea is a great choice! An improved version of the classic Annabelle hydrangea, it features sturdy stems that prevent its oversized flower heads from drooping after a Midwest thunderstorm. The shrub reaches 4 to 5 feet tall and wide in USDA Hardiness Zones 3 to 8. Extra-large, basketball-size blooms emerge brilliant white in midsummer and age to jade green through the season. Flowering persists through frost as blooms fade to tan for winter interest.

Incrediball Storm Proof™ Smooth Hydrangea blooms on new wood, ensuring a reliable floral display even after a harsh winter or heavy spring pruning. The shrub requires consistent moisture to look its best. It excels in part-sun environments, particularly in those that provide protection from intense afternoon sun. In addition to its airy blooms, this hydrangea has coarse texture that contrasts beautifully with the fine needles of evergreens. It is a top-tier choice for creating a lush, peaceful vibe in woodland gardens and is a softly peaceful focal point in formal and two-way perennial beds and borders.

Girard’s Pleasant White Azalea (Azalea x ‘Girard’s Pleasant White’)

Girard’s Pleasant White Azalea

Girard’s Pleasant White Azalea lends a touch of brilliance to spring landscapes with large, snowy-white flowers and evergreen foliage. The seasonal blooms are so profuse they blanket the plant’s mounding habit. Leaves provide year-round color, transitioning to deep green as blooms fade and the season winds down. This azalea cultivar usually reaches 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide in USDA hardiness Zone  5, making it a durable choice for Midwest winters.

To prevent its delicate white petals from scorching, this shrub prefers dappled shade or morning sun. It thrives in acidic, well-drained soil. Given its layered, multi-season interest, it is an excellent companion for rhododendrons. Its tidy growth habit and reliable spring show make it a preferred selection for foundation plantings and low-maintenance landscape borders. Girard’s Pleasant White Azalea’s evergreen foliage delivers essential structure and color to dormant winter landscapes.
