Smart Plants, Less Water

Water-wise plants are gaining in popularity – and for good reason. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), nearly 30% of household water use is devoted to outdoor purposes like lawn and garden irrigation. More than 50% of that is lost due to evaporation, wind, runoff or inefficiencies in irrigation systems.

Water-wise plants are key to building beautiful, resilient landscapes that reduce reliance on irrigation while providing color, habitat and curb appeal. As inconsistent weather patterns persist across the country – especially in the Midwest where seasonal rainfall can be unpredictable – landscapes that require less water offer clear environmental and economic advantages. For garden centers and landscape professionals, offering plants with proven drought tolerance is a smart, sustainable strategy that meets growing consumer demand.

Water-wise plants are tough – and they’re beautiful. The following varieties from Loma Vista Nursery offer vibrant blooms, striking textures and multi-season appeal while reducing the need for supplemental watering. They are proven choices for Midwest landscapes, performing reliably in USDA Hardiness Zones 4 through 8, depending on the species.

Enduring Summer Red Crepe Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica x fauriei)

Beauty Meets Drought Tolerance

Enduring Summer Red Crepe Myrtle is a compact shrub that brings bold color to sunny landscapes. While crape myrtles are more commonly associated with southern gardens, this cold-hardy selection extends north into USDA Hardiness Zone 6 and features striking red flowers from mid-summer through fall. It matures between 5 to 6 feet tall and wide, loves full sun and thrives in well-drained soils. Water needs are low once established, making it an excellent addition to Midwest plantings designed with a southern flair.

Dark Knight Bluebeard (Caryopteris x clandonensis ‘Dark Knight’)

Dark Knight Caryopteris is a standout for late-season pollinator gardens. This woody perennial blooms in late summer with deep blue flowers that attract bees and butterflies. It grows 2 to 3 feet tall and wide. Its habit is neat and rounded. Full sun and well-drained soil are key to its success in USDA Hardiness Zones 5 to 9. Prune this shrub-like perennial back in early spring to encourage fresh growth and robust flowering.

Carousel Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium ‘Carousel’)

Ornamental grasses Carousel Little Bluestem combine drought tolerance with four-season interest. A cultivar of Schizachyrium scoparium, it is native to North American prairies and perfectly adapted to Midwest conditions. ‘Carousel’ maintains a tidy, mounded form at 2 to 3 feet tall and wide and offers blue-green summer foliage that transitions to coppery red in fall. It performs well in USDA Hardiness Zones 3 to 9, and thrives in full sun. It tolerates a wide range of soils, including those that are poor or rocky.

Reliable Summer Performers

May Night Salvia is a classic perennial that earns its place in any water-wise garden. Hardy in USDA Hardiness Zones 4 to 8, it blooms profusely with deep, violet-purple flower spikes from late spring into early summer. Deadheading encourages repeat blooming. This salvia prefers full sun, grows to about 18 inches tall and wide, and is loved by bees and butterflies. Deer and rabbits ignore the plant. Its low water needs and compact habit make it ideal for borders, containers and mass plantings.

Blonde Ambition Grama Grass brings an unexpected twist to ornamental grasses in gardens and landscape designs. Native to the Great Plains and ideal in USDA Hardiness Zones 4 to 9, Blonde Ambition features horizontal, blonde seed heads that persist through winter. It remains upright even under snow, adding architectural interest to the fourth season. This ambitious gamma grass grows 2 to 3 feet tall and wide, thrives in full sun and is extremely drought-tolerant once established. It performs well in tough soils and open spaces.

Perennial Pollinator Favorites

Moonbeam Coreopsis offers long-lasting, pale-yellow blooms that cover the plant from early summer into fall. Perfect in USDA Hardiness Zones 4 to 9, it reaches about 18 inches tall and wide. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil and tolerates heat and drought once established. Regular deadheading improves appearance and encourages extended bloom time. Its fine, airy foliage adds texture, and its cheerful flowers are magnets for pollinators.

Magnus Coneflower has native appeal and water savings, making it a must-have in Midwest gardens and landscape designs. This upright coneflower features large, rose-purple petals held horizontally around coppery centers. Blooming from midsummer into fall, it grows 3 to 4 feet tall and about 2 feet wide. It thrives in full sun, tolerates drought and performs well in USDA Hardiness Zones 3 to 8. Allow seed heads to remain standing into winter for added texture and to provide food for birds.
